Chapter 15

Matt followed his grandfather up the walkway to a meticulously kept older one-story several blocks away from his grandparents' house. The desert-landscaping yard looked like a stone oasis dotted with blooming desert plants that thrived under the hundred plus summer days. Matt walked slowly so as not to startle a tiny hummingbird that was currently nosing into a large white flower that bloomed on the side of a saguaro cactus.

"Did you bring the wine?" Gramps had his finger poised to ring the doorbell.

Matt held up the expensive bottle of wine they had found at the liquor store on the way. "Are you ready to tell me what we're doing here?"

Gramps grinned and rang the bell.

As if she'd been waiting for them, the door immediately opened to reveal a smiling woman about his grandfather's age. Her gray gaze was kind, but Matt was left with the impression that she saw and catalogued every tiny detail of what went on around her.

"Nathan." Her gaze locked with Gramps' before she turned her head to allow him to brush a kiss across her cheek. Their gazes locked again and something passed between them that made Matt's insides turn to ice. When she finally dropped her gaze from Gramps', she looked past him at Matt.

He forced himself to step forward and hold out his hand. "Nice to meet you."

She grinned as if at some private joke and took his hand. "I take it Nathan didn't tell you anything about me before he dragged you over here." It wasn't a question. She turned to Gramps and raised one brow.

Gramps only shrugged, seemingly unaffected by her gentle rebuke.

"Old bastard," she said with affection.

Her word choice surprised Matt, and the obvious connection he saw as she gazed at Gramps softened his mistrust—but only slightly. After all, Grams had only been dead for what...Matt's thought trailed off as he realized it had been four years.

He frowned as he tried to come to grips with where four years had gone so quickly. Did he really expect his grandfather to remain celibate for the rest of his life?

"Come on, Matt. Let's go inside and we can crack open that bribe Nathan talked you into buying." Megan took the wine bottle from his hand and motioned him inside.

Her house smelled...warm...was the only way he could describe it. It wasn't a readily identifiable scent, but something he recognized almost viscerally. Like his grandparents' house, it made him feel comfortable and at home—like the woman herself.

He studied her as she walked through the living room and into the kitchen.

She was shorter than Grams had been, but was an
